Wolfgang Eberhardt

Scientific Director of Helmholtz Centre Berlin for Materials and Energy in Berlin Adlershof, Germany

Breaking the Wall of Energy and Pollution. How Science Is Needed For A Sustainable Supply Of Energy.

Energy use, population growth, standard of living and climate change are coupled and we have reached or even transgressed the limit of sustainability of our planet. The pathway for the solution of these challenges can be expressed in simple and clear terms, whereby the global scale technical realization requires scientific advances and breakthroughs. The physicist Wolfgang Eberhardt (1950) seeks solutions to these challenges by using the brilliant light produced by electron accelerators for materials reseach and by serving as Scientific Director of the Helmholtz Centre Berlin for Materials and Energy. Based at the science and technology park in Berlin Adlershof, the centre operates large-scale facilities for investigating the structure and function of matter – research which is not only at the brink of introducing the next generation of solar cells, materials and cell structures, but also of demonstrating how internationally collaborative research pools expertise and enables breakthroughs. Having worked at DESY, the University of Pennsylvania, EXXON, FZJ and BESSY, and having also advised on the energy science policy of the Obama administration and the US Department of Energy, Eberhardt brings his experience to Adlershof thereby fostering its reputation as one of Europe’s hubs for interdisciplinary collaboration on cutting edge Materials and Energy Research.
